Project Brief.

We had to create a wayfinding application for Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI) users in a college space. We were limited to using the Apple Watch, iPhone and had to incorporate iBeacons. The project duration was 3 weeks.

Problem Space.

iOS devices use accessibility features such as the VoiceOver screen reader. As a result, iPhones have been widely adopted within the blind community. The design challenge is to create an iOS application that enables an individual with BVI to use iBeacons in a new environment with minimal sighted assistance.

The scenario we were given:
A facilities manager working to help augment building space in collaboration with BVI students.

Research

We would be using Apple products such as iBeacon, iPhone, and/or Apple Watch for the project. This meant we needed to better understand how the products function. This information was easily available on the Apple website. We read papers and books on accessibility. Since I was undertaking the role of designing and prototyping the system, I heavily referenced Apple's human interaction guidelines. For the course of the project, it was my UX gospel. I watched several videos on how a BVI person interacts with the device. There are several videos and papers out there that can help you reflect on their experience. I consulted with professors and seniors who had previously worked with BVI users to guide me through the design process.

Development Process

Persona:

Our persona is Isabella. She is 18 years old and recently got admitted to the college of design at NC State University. She was born blind.

Scenario:

As a first year student, Isabella isn’t comfortable navigating the College of Design on her own. She volunteers to join a working group focused on making the school more accessible. The group works with a facilities manager, to develop an app and set up iBeacons to help BVI users in navigating the school.

Isabella has a presentation in Brooks Rotunda the next day. She needs to print a poster but, she’s only printed once before using the printer in the basement of Brooks. She hasn’t tried to print since the app and iBeacons were set up.

I began with lo-fi wireframes for different features. Once I got the storyboard, I began iterating on hi-fi wireframes and began designing them on Sketch. I prototyped the interactions using Principle. After a couple of rounds of critique and feedback, I was able to improve on the design and we recorded a video of how the experience could play out.
