Inspiration Wall

Due to NDA reasons, the video of the final deliverable can’t be made public. Feel free to get a glimpse of the research behind it.

The Project Brief.

This was a 3 month sponsored studio. The sponsor were upgrading their stores to be AI powered and technologically savvy. They wanted us to create an experience for their loyal customer base, while respecting their privacy concerns.

The Team.

  • Ashamsa Mathew - Ideation, User research, UI/UX, editing

  • Matthew Maharaj - Ideation, video, editing

  • Michele D'Souza - Ideation, UI

  • Grace Herndon - Ideation, User research, UI

Problem Space.

We needed to create an enhanced user experience for a car enthusiast when visiting an upgraded AI powered parts store. The project focuses on data usage for seamless and engaging experience while reinforcing trust.

Research

The sponsor gave us their research to start off. It covered everything from their user profiles, trends, and similar information. To gain greater insight into the problem space and its users we needed to study how each user interacted with the store. We conducted a naturalistic observational study at the sponsor's stores. In addition we interviewed the store managers.

Before the beginning of this project, the other class projects were designed to support us to do this project. The work we did serve as precedence for this project.

Define

Along with our project brief we were told to design for a specific segment of their users. The sponsors called the user group “The Achievers”. The Achievers are hobbyists, people who are united by their love for cars and working with cars. They’re not necessarily experts or professionals in the field but carve out time to do their own modifications and learn. From store observations to interviews, we gathered information to learn about what the current experience is for the achievers.

The pain points we identified:

  • Can't search for everything on the store' website

  • Discrepancy in inventory - Item marked available online was out of stock in the store

  • Though Luis is a regular customer, the new employee has to learn about him. Luis feels like he knows more than the employee.

  • Luis didn't get a discount or deal for his multiple purchases for the project and over the years.

After presenting our findings to the sponsors, they gave us positive feedback and we were ready for the next phase.

Development

We began with a few fun brainstorming sessions. We let our creative energy flow where the limits were our imagination. We built off each other's ideas, tried to remember all the sci-fi movies we watched and read. Eventually we had to move to reality where the limitations were defined by the resources available to us. We iterated a couple of times and worked on creating feasible and relevant features. With feedback we received from the sponsors as well as our cohort.

I began making storyboards to communicate the experience of our persona. The process brought up different pain points and other opportunities for introspection. After some iterations, I finished making the final storyboard. Now we were ready to begin designing the experience. I designed a “to be” user journey map to show how the pain points were addressed in our solution.

“To be” User Journey Map

We were designing an interactive wall which is 47.8" x 26.9" in size. The was no small task. We had to look into accessibility standards, how the person would use it. We were looking into gesture controls and needed to look into a person's reach. All in all a lot of things to look into. The wireframes went through several iterations even during the video production phase.

Regions of Interaction and Accessibility

Regions of Interaction and Accessibility

We conducted a few rounds of user testings. Through which we are able to correct minor details. After the changes were made we began filming and editing the video.

Deliverable

Due to NDA purposes, the video for this project can’t be made public. Below I list some of the features the final system has. Feel free to contact me if you are curious.
